Marriage Proposals: Pointers on Popping the Question Properly

You’ve been with your significant other for a while, and now that you’ve gotten to know each other better, you’re thinking of proposing to them. But maybe you’re nervous or you don’t know what to do. You may be asking “What if they reject my proposal?” It’s natural for that to happen, but if you’re serious about doing it, then here are some pointers on doing it properly.

Pick Out a Decent Ring

While you don’t want to bust your whole budget on an engagement ring, you can’t be too cheap with it either. Take a look at the different designs and see which ones fit you. You might even want them customized if you can’t find what you’re looking for. If you’re feeling bold, you can get an engagement ring set in your area. You can get both engagement and wedding rings in one buy, and you’re sure that they will match.

Discuss Marriage Beforehand

It can be hard for someone to say “yes” if they don’t know that it’s already been on your mind for a while. You need to let them know that you plan on marrying them, and you also have to know what they think and how they feel about it too. If they say that they aren’t ready, then it’s unlikely that you’ll get a favorable answer when you do propose to them. In that case, you should be ready to wait and work on improving your situation together.

Talk to the Parents

This one can seem old-fashioned, but you may want to ask their parents for their permission or blessing. Even though they may not be ready for it yet, it can show them that you’re serious about the move you’re going to make. It also sends the message that you respect them enough that you’re being honest about your intentions. And at least if they don’t approve yet, you can get their respect for trying.

Make Preparations

If you think that the time is right, you can then make preparations for your proposal. If you’re planning on going out for it, then you might want to make reservations according to your schedule. Practice how you’re going to say it, and ready yourself for whatever they will answer. Lastly, calm yourself down and relax. You’ve come this far, and it’s not like it’s going to be the end of the world if you propose and they decline.

Do It Privately

You may want to let everyone know that you’re proposing to them, but it might not work out as well as you might think. They might feel pressured to give you a “yes” just because she doesn’t want to waste your efforts. Or they might still be blunt enough to tell you “no”, but that might become a huge embarrassment on your part. No matter if the two of you are extroverted or introverted, just make it an affair between the two of you.

No matter what the outcome is, it doesn’t have to end your relationship right then and there. If you get their approval, then you can take it further. Getting their no can mean that you still have a ways to go in improving your relationship.
