Murphy's Garage Music News

Well it looks like the old garage burned down so it is time to rebuild.

First off, the new Beatles Box set is great and the sound is terrific. But what sense does it make to put it on your ipod?

If you don't have the money to spend on the Beatles maybe a better choice would be the new Big Star Box set. This is a great 4 dosc set containing the 3 studio albums from Big Star along with a live concert from 1973. All in all a great deal and a great set.

You can listen to the album now at

Last night Philly AAA station WXPN had a Bruce Springsteen Birthday Party where they invited local artist to do a Bruce cover. There were two strong points. The first was James Maddock who was the lead singer for a band "Wood" back in 2000 who did a stunning "She's the One"

As his band left the stage this young lady came out all by herself with her acoustic guitar and did a killer version of "Meeting Across the River"

Some good music here

Got a special this month from emuisc. The gave out 50 unit reward for being a member. Used them to buy a Jimmy Rodgers box set. 108 songs in the set and it cost only 60 units.

Albums out this week

David Rawlings Machine; Well made and a top 5 choice for me

Tom Petty, Anthology Live: can't get any better than this

Tom Waits Glitter and Doom Live, you lose the quirkiness of the show on the disc, hard to understand, Fannin Street and Lucky Day save the album along with a few older standards, disappointed in this one

Paul McCartney, Live NYC CD/DVD combo: best of the week, fun throughout

So if you are sitting around trying to figure out what to buy someone in thier 50's for Christmas look no futher than

Amchitka, the 1970 concert that launched Greenpeace. This is a wonderful concert from 1907 with Phil Ochs, Joni Mitchell and James Taylor

It is a 2 cd set that will make my top 10 this year. Fantastic

Most of the time I like the live show a whole lot better than the record, but in the case of One Eskimo, it is all the music.

Not a fan of cartoons and during their show they play one. Album got me though

I had another great, fun year going to shows. Saw a lot of the older artist, and from what I saw from the newer groups out there we are in for a pretty good start of the new decade in music. Cut down a bit this year and only made it to 147 shows this year.

Here are the ones at the top of my list

Springsteen shows both here and NY /NJ topped my list again. Best moment was his 3rd Philly show when the E Street Band performed “London’s Calling”

Also went to the Elvis Costello taping which airs in late January, which was very interesting.

Monsters of Folk show at the Academy was just plain good.

Saw the Duke and the King 3 times this year, starting in Teek’s backyard and then the follow-ups at the Church where we saw them grow into a fine group.

Gaslight Anthem, Airborne Toxic Event led the way for the new decade with great shows at the Note and the Troc

Diana Jones, one of my favorite Roots/Americana artists stopped by Philly 4 times this year and she is just a wonderful performer and storyteller.

Saw Emmylou Harris’s 3 Girls and their Buddy tour both here in Philly and in Harrisburg. This show had my second best song in concert this year when Emmylou did a cover of Joni’s “Magdalene Laundries”

I saw Cynthia Mason play one song as part of the XPN Bruce Springsteen show in Ocober and it sold me on her as someone I would want to see again.

Florance and the Machine, Kathleen Edwards, Hayes and Chuck Prophat also stopped by Philly for some fun.

Roman Candle, watch them

Can’t wait for 10

Murph, Happy New Year.  Thanks for your generosity!

Love the Darcie Miner album.  Forgot all about her.  You turned me on to Diana Jones--have all her albums.

Really love the Lissie EP, and capturing (Replay Music) the KCRW show from 11/24/09 as we speak.  Need more from her.

Thanks buddy!
