Title: Regarding Mary
Post by KarenL on 05/20/06 at 13:10:38

This isn't a song interpretation, or a very informative post, but does anyone else really like this song? For anyone who has seen Niagara, Niagara, do the lyrics to Regarding Mary relate to the movie? Or does anyone have a background on the lyrics to this song? Sorry, that was alot of questions.

I love the buildup to the following lyrics, and also the ending:

And it isn't easy
And it isn't plain
We try to lose her, but she remains and so
Maybe we will all go insane oh
Just like Mary yeah....

Anyway, I love this song...

Karen

Boy, it's been a long time since I have seen that movie. I think the lyrics do relate. From what I remember, it about two lost souls who go on a little shoplifting and robbery journey.  Both have mental illness issues, besides the stealing. The girl had Tourette's Syndrome among other things, the guy was very depressive. Kind of a dark and depressing movie with no happy ending in sight. It wasn't a great movie, but interesting enough if you're thinking about renting it. Maybe someone else has more of a memory of it.

Great soundtrack though. I think it's out of print and be can quite hard to find. Let me know if you haven't heard it, I think I have a few laying around.

Thanks for the info, Jan! Doesn't sound very chipper and uplifting, lol, but I will rent it...especially for the soundtrack and to see how Patty's song relates : )

Patty talks about this song at a early concert she gave at Hamilton College way back when before LWG was even released. She explained that one of the former occupants of her apartment, I think it was in Nashville, was schizophrenic, and this song was dedicated to her. Just thought I would add that.

Thanks, Marybeth! What is funny is that I have a copy of this show and completely forgot Patty mentioning this :-[

I just love playing this song, and this is my favorite bit of the lyrics to sing.  The way Patty twists the words "easy" "plain" "lose her" and "remains" around in the throat, are incredibly fun.
