After tonights show Buddy will miss a few nights as he is off to LA for the Grammy's with Allison & Robert

Live Last Night: Three Girls and Their Buddy
Musician's-musician Buddy Miller reclaimed his "Wide River to Cross" from Levon Helm, for whom it helped to win a Grammy. Shawn Colvin, Patty Griffin, and Emmylou Harris joined their crystalline, haunting voices on the Depression-era gospel of "We Shall All Be Reunited." Colvin covered Miller's cover of Richard Thompson's "Keep Your Distance," then followed it up with, er, Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy." (And that ubiquitous 2006 uber-smash was one of the only songs of the night not greeted with a cheer of recognition. Only at the Birchmere!)

So what do you want from a concert, anyway?

A: All of that and more, please.

Like, 30 to 60 minutes more. Of music, not foreplay. It's the economy, stupid!

(Read the rest of the review after the jump.)

The premise of the "Three Girls and Their Buddy" tour that kicked off at the Birchmere last night sounds like a can't-miss. Its four venerable all-stars of Americana have variously played in one another's bands, sang each other's songs, guested on or produced each other's albums, or all of the above. An informal, "Storytellers"-style round-robin among musicians with so much chemistry and history and mutual regard? Sign us up! But if the concept was tantalizingly New Pornographers, the execution -- on this opening night of the tour, anyway -- was more darn
 Yankees.

Griffin had the best night of the four, offering two gorgeous, as-yet-unreleased songs from her upcoming Miller-produced album, and also standing in vocally for Buddy's wife and frequent collaborator Julie Miller on "All My Tears" and "Chalk." At 44, Griffin is the kid of this bunch by almost a decade, so that's not just an embarrassment of chops on stage; it's also a wealth of shared musical experience. Each of the four singer/songwriters could fill the club solo, which probably explains the $110 ticket price. And with two nights sold out, it's hard to argue that $110 is too much.

Still, the show was a bit overpriced because banter ate up a quarter of the 110-minute running time. It was funny and even touching (Emmylou's romantic history lesson about Sara and A.P. Carter preceding "How She Could Sing the Wildwood Flower," for instance), right up until it wasn't. Everyone but Colvin made at least one nervous joke about talking too much. After one particularly meandering gabfest, Miller sighed, "Even a song from me would be a relief at this point." Of course, then he went on to nail "Wide River," a contender for performance of the night. All in, each artist only sang lead on five or six songs -- not exactly a tough day at the office, much less in the cotton fields.

The foursome's respect and affection for one another was evident, but so was the fact that none had given much thought to how the show ought to proceed. (And the audience? Reverent and forgiving, though there was some post-show grumbling in the lobby about the surfeit of tunes.) Harris admitted they hadn't rehearsed, saying no one on stage knew what any of the others would play when it got to be his or her turn. Except for the finale, presumably -- that gospel song -- which Colvin and Harris sang from lyric sheets. (Griffin and Miller had just recorded it together, so they knew it.) It was a glorious performance; soaring, transcendent, and timeless, like the whole evening could -- and should -- have been.

-- CHRIS KLIMEK

(Miller, Harris, Griffin and Colvin will perform again at the Birchmere tonight; the show is sold out.)

Yes, Tonight at the Keswick

What you get is a round of 5 songs each with a 2 song joint encore. That will change a little the next 3 night as Buddy will be in LA for the Grammy's. He will be missed as he was on fire last night

For those of you if Patty has left ATO for EMI the answer is no. The deal was struck and it is just another avenue to get Patty's music out. If the deal would have fallen through, ATO was ready to release it.

Did anyone happen to notice that ATO sign Paul McCartney>

Jim Smith from DC, nice to see you last night

In other words, it's the same format as last year's tour....  Wink

I went to the Harrisburg show last night, specifically because Patty was on the bill.  I only know a handful of songs by Emmylou, Buddy, and Shawn, but each of the performers put on a great show.  The banter between songs was sometimes quite hysterical and always truly engaging.  It was refreshing to hear musicians who are actually talented talk about how they write songs and how other musicians inspire them.  And, as each person played a song, the other 3 always showed as much reverence and emotion as the rest of the audience.

I tried to remain objective, but by the end of the night it was clear I wouldn't be able to overcome my Patty-bias: she stole the show.

Patty's set: Wade in the Water, a new song from the upcoming gospel album, Long Ride Home, Heavenly Day, House of Gold (Hank Williams, Jr.), Mary (encore with everyone)

Wade in the Water was fantastic.  If you jump on youtube, there isn't video (yet) of her last night, but there is video of her playing it recently.  The video doesn't do it justice.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcJb0LOk8wc  There's also a video of her doing a new song.  While it isn't the new song she played last night, I still think it's great.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wl8-ueSh4IA

The second song Patty played last night, a new one from the upcoming album, had my eyes watering and my lip quivering.  It was BEAUTIFUL.  Even Emmylou commented, once Patty finished, that the audience looked stunned.  That new album will be worth buying for this song alone.  The song was not, as a previous post said, I'll See You Again.  She didn't play that.

I'd never heard the Hank Williams, Jr. song before last night.  Her version was more somber than his.  I think she said House of Gold would also be on the new album, but I can't remember for sure.

(I figured I wouldn't go into great detail for Long Ride Home, Heavenly Day, and Mary.  Everybody knows those songs.  But, if you're wondering, Patty played them beautifully).

If you can catch a show, I encourage it wholeheartedly.  Allow me to rub it in a little: I can't wait until the 19th when I get to see it all over again in Baltimore.

Thanks I forgot HD last night after working in Harrisburg all day then driving back to Philly.

Tonight at the Keswick was a completely different show with the girls helping each other out more than last night, No Buddy

Patty did

Stay on the Ride
Long Ride Home
House of Gold
The Dud (a love song played for only the 2nd time ever as per RT)
Waiting for my Children to come home
I'll See you again
Truth #2

Mary

The Dud was funny interesting song about what a dud ones lover can be.

The song of this night went to Emmylou when she covered Joni Mitchell's “Magdalene Laundries” a song Emmy had done last year for the Joni tribute done by NoSuch Records. It is one I know Arlene would die for

I would love to hear that one live as well as a live performance of In Rodanthe, which she also performed at the Keswick --  it's not my favorite song of hers-- she wrote it to be the theme for the "chick flick" of the same name released last year which stars Richard Gere and Diane Lane. I'm told it plays over the title credits.  The soundtrack version has lots of strings and I don't believe that Emmylou had ever played it live for an audience before the Keswick show.

BTW.  Here's the full set list for the February 4th show at The Birchmere:

01 - EH - Jupiter Rising
02 - PG - If I Had My Way, I’d Tear This Building Down (Blind Willie Johnson)
03 - SC - Trouble
04 - BM - Does My Ring Burn Your Finger
05 - EH - Strong Hand (Song for June)
06 - PG - Our Love is a Dud
07 - SC - I’ll Be Back (Beatles) - with PG and ELH harmonizing
08 - BM - To Love Somebody (Barry and Robin Gibb)
09 - EH w/BM - My Antonia
10 - PG - I Want to be With You Always (Lefty Frizzell)
11 - SC - Summer Dress
12 - BM - Poison Love
13 - EH - Moon Song
14 - PG - Not a Bad Man
15 - SC - Witchita Skyline
16 - BM w/PG - Shelter Me
17 - EH - This is to Mother You w/ PG and SC (Sinead O’Connor)
18 - PG - When it Don’t Come Easy

Before the song Emmy did say she had never played the song in public before. It was a good song but not great

I thought it was a pretty good song but I thought there were other songs I was longing to hear.  But, then again, I wasn't the only one in the audience (like some other audience members thought they were - mostly Shawn fans that felt a need to yell out requests - I'm not a fan of this).  Shawn seems to have played the intro to the song they requested and then faked them out with the Crazy (Gnarls Barkley) cover.  Good stuff.

I saw them at the PNC Pavilion in Cincinnati last night. It was an amazing experience.  The highlight for me was hearing the two new songs from Patty's soon-to-be released album with Buddy Miller, "Downtown Church."

The setlist from a COLD Sunday night at Ravinia in Chicago:

3. If I Had My Way, I'd Tear This Building Down (PG)
4. Shotgun Down the Avalanche (SC)
5. Shelter Me (BM & PG)
6. Prayer in Open D (EH)
7. Chief (PG)
8. Summer Dress (SC)
9. All My Tears (BM)
10. Imagine (John Lennon cover) (EH)
11. Up to the Mountain (PG)
12. Private Universe (Crowded House cover) (SC)
13. Don't Tell Me (BM)
14. The Pearl (EH)
15. Stay on the Ride (PG)
16. I Don't Know Why (SC)
17. Gasoline & Matches (BM & PG)
18. Sweet Old World (Lucinda Williams cover) (EH)
19. I Am Not a Bad Man (PG)
20. If These Walls Could Speak (Jimmy Webb cover) (SC)
21. Heart of Hearts (Stephen Bruton cover) (BM)
22. We Shall All Be Reunited (All)
Encore
23. Bright Morning Stars (All)
24. Mary (All)

Certainly an enjoyable concert (I was especially impressed with Colvin, who I'd never listened to much). Would have liked a better setlist from Patty personally, as Chief doesn't do much for me and I think Stay on the Ride is one of my least favorite Patty songs, though the newer one (I Am Not a Bad Man) was a knockout.
